Original Instrument Ensemble
Students seek materials, design and fabricate instruments, and develop ensemble music featuring the instruments.
Instrument Building
Students learn to build musical instruments such as cigar box guitars, African thumb pianos, and didgeridoos. Classes include basic tool usage, a historical overview of the instrument, and basic playing techniques.
Field Recording and Sound Art
Students learn about field recording, sound design, and sound installation. Classes emphasize hands-on experience capturing and creating sounds, digital editing, installing and presenting, and pairing sound with other mediums.
Repertory Ensembles
Students with instrumental experience learn and perform the music of Fela Kuti, Steve Lacy, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thomas Chapin, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, and others.
