Instrument Building

Original instrument ensemble workshops can be conducted in a variety of formats, ranging from short afternoon sessions to two-week intensive courses in which students seek materials, design and fabricate instruments, and develop ensemble music featuring the instruments.  Click each photo to see more.  Click here for video.

Oakwood School – North Hollywood, CA Winter Immersion is an intensive 2-week program at the Oakwood School. In my class, middle school students seek materials, design and build instruments, and write music using these instruments.  Contact hours: 56

ACE is a progressive summer arts program at the Oakwood School.  In past years I have taught a three week instrument building class for 4th – 6th grade students, with instruments such as cigar box guitar, mbira (African thumb piano), and didgeridoo.  Contact hours: 9

Jack Straw Productions in Seattle, WA, is an organization dedicated to the sonic arts.

2010 workshop in conjunction with Tiffany Lin’s This Old Piano gallery exhibit.  Students created music with found objects and explored Hardwicks Hardware store for unusual sound making objects.  Photos by Tiflin.
